Today in our blog, we are writing about Link Building. If this word sounds odd to you or you have never heard about it, don’t worry! After reading this post, you will have a a complete overview of this issue, so let’s go!
Link building is a SEO strategy which consists of having other websites linking to a given website. In this way, it is considered as a relevant result by search engines and ranks higher. In other words, link building is a technique to improve a website position in search engine results, which is commonly known as SEO.
For example, asking your friends to share your post on their social profiles is link building. Including a link to your website when leaving a comment on a post is also link building. But let’s not fool ourselves! This is just a simplified representation of what link building truly entails.
How to do Link Building?
Generally speaking, there are three main techniques.
1st. Natural technique. Having original, high-quality web content will make other websites link to ours at their own initiative.
2nd. Whitehat. When we don’t have other websites linking to ours by their own decision, we can manage them to do it. However, it has to be done in such a way that it seems to be “natural” for Google not to penalize us. But, how can we do this? One example of this is getting in contact with some websites for them to link to ours. This must be done in a progressive way and they should avoid always linking to the same web page, change the anchor text, etc.
3rd. Blackhat. It includes all those techniques which may have a quick positive effect but can result in our site being banned from Google. Some of these techniques are: publishing on other blogs repetitive useless comments (including links), showing different contents to users and search engines, buying and selling links, etc.
What to do before starting applying these Link Building techniques?
Link building is a good idea to get our website ranking high in search engines, but there are some steps which need to be taken beforehand:
1- Creating a website with a suitable number of pages. We will avoid websites linking always to the same web page and, in this way, being considered as spam by Google.
2- Having a responsive web design so that our website can be displayed in any device: computers, tablets, smartphones…
3- Creating high quality, varied web content: manuals, product or service descriptions, advices…but always on the field our website is focused on.
4- Facilitating sharing of information by means of buttons, plugins and social widgets.
5- Creating social networks communities. This is a long term step so it takes time, but it’s one of the most important. Being present in all social networks doesn’t necessarily mean having a bigger community. It’s important to identify the one that better suits our needs and to devote the necessary time.
6- Taking part in professional communities, such as LinkedIn.
